Senate committee to consider expanding smoking ban
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

PROVIDENCE, R.I. A Senate committee is expected to hear legislation today that would permanently extend a smoking ban to small bars and private clubs.

Those establishment enjoy exemptions from the ban under the current smoking law. But a judge has temporarily extended it to cover those bars and clubs as well while he considers a lawsuit challenging the exemptions.

Legislators have said they're unhappy some of the bars and clubs that are exempt were using their status to recruit customers, so they're considering changing the law.

The Senate Committee on Health and Human Services is set to consider a proposal extending the ban this afternoon.
