Carpio arraigned on additional charges after fighting with ACI guards
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The man accused of killing a Providence police officer was arraigned today on charges he assaulted corrections officers.
Twenty-six-year-old Esteban Carpio did not enter a plea.
He was again wearing a plastic spit shield -- and was held by the arms by two officers.
Carpio was more than an hour late to court. Corrections officials say he had to be pepper-sprayed because he was refusing to let them put restraints on his legs and refusing to let them photograph him.
More than a dozen of Carpio's relatives and friends were in court, some wearing T-shirts with Carpio's picture.
Carpio is charged with murder in the killing of Detective Sergeant James Allen. He had been scheduled for a bail hearing on that charge, but the judge delayed it because he doesn't yet have an in-state attorney.
